In early 2017, the City of San Ramon formed the Dougherty Valley Tree Citizens Committee (DVTCC) to evaluate infrastructure damage related to maturing trees that were planted in narrow turf strips throughout Dougherty Valley neighborhoods. The DVTCC was comprised of concerned Dougherty Valley residents appointed by the City Council to work with City staff to develop a Dougherty Valley Tree and Planting Strip Management Plan (Plan).
The Plan outlines the strategic process for developing an initial Annual Work Plan (AWP) followed by recurring AWPs as the basis for an ongoing, multi-year work plan. The goal is to preserve trees for as long as possible while maintaining community appeal. The AWP focuses on prioritizing locations to address trees based on the severity of damage and the size of planting strips. Approved by the City Council in November 2017, the City’s Public Works Department is in the process of implementing the Plan.

Since the Plan’s adoption, seven AWPs have been completed, addressing 29 subdivisions. In total, these areas account for 647,225 square feet (14.86 acres) of converted turf out of 2,864,070 square feet (65.75 acres) within Dougherty Valley, representing approximately 25% of the total area identified for improvement.
