If you successfully complete a City of San Ramon Lifeguard class, participants that get hired and work as a Lifeguard for the City of San Ramon will be eligible to receive a $100 reimbursement toward the training class fee!

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard Training

Start preparing for one of the best jobs in town – Lifeguarding poolside! The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course provides participants with the entry level knowledge and skills required to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies.

Successful completion of all practical skills and written tests will provide certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED for Lifeguards, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel, Oxygen Administration and Preventing Disease Transmission.

Scholarships are available for this program. Resuscitation mask and lifeguard pack are provided.

Prerequisites: Must be 15 years old and complete the following pre-requisite skills:

  1. Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards, tread for two minutes with hands under your armpits, then swim 50 more yards.
  2. Swim 20 yards, recover a 10-pound object from between 7-10ft depth, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

If you successfully complete a City of San Ramon Lifeguard class, participants that get hired and work as a Lifeguard for the City of San Ramon will be eligible to receive a $100 reimbursement toward the training class fee!

Lifeguard Hiring:

Interested in working with the City of San Ramon? Take a certification course and apply online - during the Fall and Winter, applications are accepted on an on-going basis.

Looking for a summer position? Get certified by mid-April - Lifeguard Skill Assessment and Group Interviews are hosted at the end of March and April. All newly hired Lifeguards will attend a new Lifeguard orientation in May along with two shadow shifts during weekend Recreation Swim.

Summer Staff Trainings
Mandatory Summer Lifeguard Staff Training Week starts June 5 and continues June 8-10, 2026. After training week, staff trainings are held every Friday from 8:30–11:00 AM, except on June 12 and July 3. If a Friday training is missed, staff must attend a make-up session on Monday from 6:30–8:00 AM or wait until the next Friday training before being scheduled to work again.
