SB 1383 is California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy. This is targeting a sharp reduction in the generation of methane, a harmful greenhouse gas that results from the decomposition of organics disposed at the landfill. The State is mandating these reductions to address climate change impacts. The City will be facilitating San Ramon’s residents and businesses in addressing SB 1383 compliance through education and outreach.
This effort is essentially to ensure all organics are composted (aerobically; with oxygen) instead of landfilled (anaerobically; without oxygen), and that surplus edible food is rescued to feed hungry people instead of going to waste.
Public Works has created a brochure to answer questions for both residents and businesses regarding the details of what is required, and when. You can download the brochure here.
The California Department of Resources, Recycling, and Recovery, also known as CalRecycle, has developed many resources regarding all aspects of SB 1383 and can be found on the CalRecycle website at: https://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/organics/slcp/
